Juliet Linzmeier Q/A

Q How is the Greenwave Aotearoa scholarship helping your goals?

A This financial support will allow me to focus on completing my master's research and contributing meaningfully to the seaweed and aquaculture industries without the added stress of financial constraints. The emerging seaweed industry is an exciting and underdeveloped field of science and agriculture with immense potential for supporting a sustainable economy. I came to the University of Waikato specifically to gain the hands-on skills and contacts needed to advance this industry and with financial support, I can dedicate more time to my experiments and further develop the practical knowledge and networks I need to excel.

Q What’s next for you, Juliet?

A After graduating, I aim to focus on developing products from brown seaweeds, particularly those derived from alginate and fucoidan, to bridge the gap between supply and demand in this field. By collaborating with researchers and businesses that are shaping this field, I hope to contribute to the growth and resilience of the seaweed sector in New Zealand and beyond.

Q Can you tell us what you’ve worked on with seaweed and how this is helped by joining our Greenwave Aotearoa internship programme?

A I am currently pursuing my Master’s project on optimizing hatchery protocols for cultivating the seaweed Ecklonia radiata. My research focuses on determining the ideal nutrient and lighting conditions to enhance seedling growth rates, improve outplanting survivability, and increase resilience to environmental exposure. I also have hands-on experience through my role in the R&D department of a mussel farm in California, where I contributed to improving spawning and cryopreservation protocols. These experiences involved working in laboratories and large fishing vessels where I’ve collaborated with key industry professionals, strengthening my practical skills and industry knowledge. With my background in aquaculture research, a strong commitment to sustainability, and a versatile skill set that bridges science and practical applications, I aim to contribute meaningfully to the advancement of the seaweed industry.

Q How do you see the opportunities in seaweed?

A I believe regenerative seaweed farming has the potential to transform Aotearoa New Zealand, both environmentally and socially. By integrating seaweed farming into areas with fish and mussel farming, we can establish IMTA systems that improve water quality, enhance marine ecosystems, and provide economic benefits to local communities. I’m passionate about seeing seaweed farming implemented across the country to support sustainable growth in coastal areas. After graduating, I hope to advance the seaweed industry by developing sustainable, seaweed-based alternatives to single-use plastics, reducing our reliance on petroleum-based materials. I want to combine my current research with practical solutions that benefit the environment and position New Zealand as a leader in sustainable aquaculture.
