RNZ: Getting commercial with seaweed farms in Rakiura

Rakiura/Stewart Island fisherman Zane Smith has deployed New Zealand’s first commercial seaweed farm using a special Norwegian infrastructure.

It's growing giant kelp in partnership with the Greenwave Aotearoa venture set up by the consultancy firm, EnviroStrat. Greenwave Aotearoa specialises in regenerative ocean seaweed farming.

The aim is to use the seaweed in food, skin care products and nutraceuticals. Zane Smith works alternating 6 months collecting paua and crayfish.

Now in partnership with Greenwave Aoteraroa and its head of aquaculture operations Ryan Marchington, he's setting up specialised sites to grow seaweed. They both join Susie to talk about the venture.
