The new global superpower? Sea

"The ocean’s a big, gnarly place," shared Rebecca Barclay-Cameron of the challenges we’ve faced head-on to grow and scale a seaweed industry.

In this brilliant new piece The New Global Superpower? Seaweed, by journalist Kate Evans for New Zealand Geographic, Bex shares some of our next steps.

It’s rewarding to see Greenwave Aotearoa and EnviroStrat featured in this important story. The article dives deep into seaweed, and touches on our goal to restore the ocean’s mauri through large-scale regenerative seaweed farming with commercial gains.

Embroidering our many bays with native seaweeds could not only buffer coasts from storm surges, filter excess nutrients, and support biodiversity but it will open new markets, products, and revenue streams for growers wanting to take the leap.

As Rebecca shares, it hasn’t been easy. From heatwaves to marine pests, we’re learning, adapting, and pushing forward with iwi partners toward an ocean economy that supports both nature and people.
